I have loved you with an everlasting love. Before time began, I knew you. When time was right , I revealed Myself to you. I lifted you out of that sea of despair and set you down on a firm foundation. I wrapped an ermine robe around you: My robe of righteousness. I sang you a love song, whose beginning and end are veiled in eternity. I infused meaning into your mind and harmony into your heart. Join Me in singing My song. Together we will draw others out of darkness into My marvelous Light. ( Jesus Calling by Sarah Young) How do we respond? Matthew 5:16 ‘ In the same way , let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven. The final three chapters of Ephesians elaborate on the love of God has displayed and teaches us how we ought to respond to that love. Paul exhorts us to be ye therefore followers of God ( Eph. 5:1) and lays out instructions on how we are to carry out that commandment in our relationships with fellow believers, in the home, at work, and in our stance against the enemy. We respond to God`s love by loving others the same way God loved us.
How did God love us ?
when did God love us?
What kind of love does He have for us?
Do we have to work for it ?
Do we have to love Him first?
Can we love like others like God love us?
Lest anyone believe that we earned the love of the Lord in any way, Ephesians emphasizes ‘ He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, God devised his plan of salvation before he created the world or any of us, so that none of us can claim credit. Before you were good or evil He loved you. Can we love anyone before they love us? and can we keep loving them if they never love us back? The short answer is yes, but let me build my case. The Father did not wait for us to invite his Son to save us from our sins, but rather he demonstrates his love for us in that ‘ while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us ( Rom. 5:8) Isaiah prophesied, He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities. God love came first. So any love we manifest toward God must come from a responsive love, a love that comes as a result of the great love wherewith he loved us. The type of love we have toward God is phileo love, a rapport love, one that responds in kind to a love shown. If someone shows us love then we will show them love, but that is not the kind of love that God wants to have towards the body of Christ. God`s love is agape love, an aggressive love that is always abounding, always producing and never based on the other person. Are we capable of unconditional love? Yes but it must come from God`s heart, we can not do this own our own. My human nature we put conditions on giving love to people, we pick and chose. But God said love your enemies, now who would pick enemies to love? God did and God said ‘ If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.
After telling us to follow God, Ephesians gives us the nature and essence of our obedience. It exhorts us to walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us. We follow God by walking in love. We are to forebear one another in love, speak the truth in love, and grow together into the body of Christ together in love. Forgive one another even as God for Christ`s sake hath forgiven you. We are members one of another, on the same team. The world shall know us as Christ`s disciples by our love for one another. Through the epistle to the Ephesians, God describes his love for us and the power he has made available to us to follow him, the strengthening our inner person has its purpose knowing the love of Christ and rooting and grounding us in that love. Christ shall then dwell in our hearts by faith, then we can walk in love.
