The cards of life. I love to play a card game called Spades. I choose to believe I’m a “force to be reckoned with,” so if you’re not skilled, don’t play as my opponent. It could get ugly for you. In Spades, all four players bid a number of tricks. Each team adds together the bids of the two partners, and the total is the number of tricks that team must try to win in order to get a positive score. I have had some bad (low) cards in my hand but still won the game because my partner had a great had. In life, you may have some cards that you do not want and did not deserve.
As believers, we know the end of the story–We win the game if we just hold on to God’s unchanging Hand. But what about now? In Psalm 27:13, David said, “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. If we are not seeing the goodness of the Lord, then maybe we are playing our hand alone. Let Jesus be your partner. It does not matter what’s in your hand. What matters is that we are in God’s Hands. If we can look across the card table of life and see Jesus in front of us, we have nothing to worry about, and we KNOW we’ve already won! Keeping our eyes on Jesus brings Peter to mind and the fact that he walked on water as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus.
Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.” When life deals you a so-called bad hand, do not panic. Jesus is our partner. God never meant for us to play this game of life by ourselves. Many people throw in the towel because they feel they have no partner. Your mother, your father, and/or your spouse may be gone, but God will always be your partner. Remember, He promised, “I will never leave you or forsake you. I will be with you till the end of the earth.”
In the book of Genesis 37:18, Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him, then sold him into slavery. They said, “Now we will see what happens to his dream.” What they were saying was, “There’s no way his dream can come true now. We do not care what God showed him. We are more powerful than God.” Joseph was dealt a bad card by his family. Potiphar`s wife framed Joseph and got him arrested–another bad card in the hand of Joseph`s life. Joseph trusted the cupbearer to get him out of prison, but the man forgot all about him–another bad card dealt to Joseph. God was with him playing the cards of life, even in prison. Joseph went from the pit to the palace because God was his partner. Likewise, your best days are in front of you because God is playing cards with you–not against you. 1 John 4:4, “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Romans 8:37-38 says, “The one who loves us gives us an overwhelming victory in all these difficulties. What difficulties? Distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, loneliness—storms that cause us to say, “If it’s not one thing, it’s another.” If these cards are in your hand, do not worry because you have in infallible partner—JESUS. He said “I will intercede for you when you do not know what to pray for. If I am for you, who can be against you?” Friend, the hand dealt to you by life does not matter if you are in Christ Jesus! He willingly DIED for us, giving us the ultimate winning hand. Why would He not take care of us and supply all our needs? Paul said, “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God`s Love, which is in Christ Jesus. Our Lord shows us that we cannot be separated by death or life; by angels or rulers, by anything in the present or anything in the future; by forces or powers in the world, above or in the world below; or by anything else in creation. In other words, we are partners for life, so we cannot lose; therefore, we can enjoy the journey. Remember, the Joy of the Lord is your strength.
I am so glad that Jesus did not throw in the towel when He was dealt a bad hand. He was betrayed, beaten, depressed, and denied by his best friend. He had to leave his home town, was spat on, and talked about, but He never quit. Jesus did not quit on us, and we should not quit on Him. Our All-knowing Heavenly Father knows the hand you have been dealt. It was no accident. You have the right cards. Let Him tell you when to play them. As Kenny Rogers said, “Know when to hold them and fold them.” That is why the Word says, “In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path—tell you what move to make. In light of that, there may come a time when the questions arises, “When can a 3 of Spades defeat a King of Spades?” When that time comes, your answer should be, “Whenever JESUS (the One who raised the dead; the One who fed a multitude with 2 small fish and a single loaf; the One who calmed a raging sea; the One who suffered, bled, and died, but rose from the dead with All Power in His Hand and is, yet, Alive TODAY) is your partner!” That’s shouting material……HALLELUJAH!!!!!
