We At C.B. Helping Hands Ministries Salute Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Celebration Speaker: Rev./ Evangelist Shelia Benjamin~Gholston

Black History Program in Grants, New Mexico……

To God be the Glory In All Things…..

It is an honor for me to stand here before you today and honor Dr. Kings memory. To honor a life well lived.

I start out with two questions: 1. Do you have a dream ?  2. What are you doing to keep the dream alive?

When I look at history, there’s a story that has opened door’s of opportunity and unleashes a sigh of wonder…… But it somehow does not go into the complete depth of the true effects and impact that it has made in the lives of others that read about the struggles or the emotional controversies that one man must have endured. Yet it paved a way for mankind to look at the injustices that we often inflict upon each other. We all are where we are today because this one man took a stand for all human beings to co-exist with one another.

Over the years I’ve heard many speak about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The infamous speech ” I have a Dream”. I can safely say, that most of us are familiar with that particular speech. We all know the stories, the marches, the movement, a revolution on the rise, a force not to be reckoned with.

Yet when I look at the journey of this one man, I see a love story. A story that carries the burden of being ahead of your time, of being misunderstood by those you are trying to help.

This story is not one that is fully told. It’s a man with a God given vision that no one else really sees or understand. It tells of a man with the odds of his life purpose, and destiny stacked against him. This was a dream, a vision that was implanted in him before he left his mother’s womb to love all mankind. He understood that his life was not his own. He understood that there was a greater call on his life. He understood that the call on his life was bigger than he. He was called for a mission, a purpose for his time. He was abused and misunderstood, yet he made the choice to love any way.   Jeremiah 29:11 ” For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  He once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that.” ” Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” He understood that hate was to great of a burden to carry; Despite who hated him he decided to love. He understood that love could unite a nation. He reached out to a nation and manifested a ideal of what unifies and binds us together, and that is love. Love is a powerful act that can shake a universe to receive God’s unconditional, unwavering, un-biased, Agape love. A love that is unshaken, unmoved, unmotivated by not getting the same in return. A love just existing in the possibilities of reaching it’s target, a man, a voice that would take a stand for peace, fight against injustices through love. Dr. King understood 1 Corinthians 13 : 4-7 all to well. ” Love suffers long, and is kind, love does not envy; love does not parade itself, it is not puffed up; does not behave rudely; does not seek it’s own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love is patient, Love is kind.”

I salute Dr. King today because I realize

It is not by chance that I stand before you today in Grants, New Mexico. I am able to stand before you today because I stand on the shoulders of Dr. King. He paved the way for others like you and I  to follow. We all must realize that the dreamer might die, but the dream lives on because of people like you and I that keep the dream alive. We must all challenge ourselves to take a page from Dr. Kings story. To keep the dream alive and move it forward. I thank God today for giving Dr. King a vision that changed a nation.

I ask him to awaken in me a love for all mankind that I may make a difference in the world in which I live………

What’s your dream? What are you doing to keep the dream alive? Look around you, there is something we all can do to help our fellow man. Can you take time out of your busy schedule and lend someone a helping hand of love.

What do you intend to do ; to make this world a better place?
